Swing is a type of jazz music and partnered dance which was created in Harlem, New York during the 1930s. It was born out of the African American community at a time when the community was marginalized in the United States. Yet the dance was a part of a larger artistic voice known as the Harlem Renaissance, bringing individuals together and breaking down stereotypes.

It is joyful and vibrant dance and since its creation, it has brought people a means of collective expression and in turn, community. Today Swing dance exists in cities all over the world.

Our goal at Montpeul’ Swing is to share the joy of the dance and its rich history. In our classes, students learn to dance with each other, partaking in this rich tradition of music.
